I certainly hope that the city does not follow through and does not waste a lot of our money on this idea of medians on Main St.
I don’t see how any of this is going to reduce the number of accidents or make crossing the street any safer for pedestrians.
There are plenty of laws in place right now that would prevent these problems, but in Cortez these laws are simply not enforced. Drivers don’t stop at stop signs, and in lots of cases they don’t even slow down even if there is another vehicle that has the right of way.
Speed limits don’t mean anything, especially on Main St. where the problem is said to be and, if a light turns red, you can bet that more cars are still coming through. Cross walk or no cross walk, seldom does anyone ever stop for a pedestrian unless he or she is right in front of a driver. Operation Cross Walk proved that but, nothing has changed.
Every time that I am on the streets in Cortez I see these problems, but what I never see is someone getting pulled over for a traffic violation. Spending nearly a million dollars of our tax money to fix this problem is not going to fix anything if the laws are not enforced. If the laws were enforced there would be no need to use this money for such nonsense.
I would say that if the city has this much money to waste, they should be looking toward reducing the cost for people who live here. They could cut water rates, refuse rates and city taxes.
For them to even think about this Main St. project just says they have way too much of our tax money and need to waste it on something in order to keep collecting it and, if in fact they go ahead with this project, I would certainly believe that the money should come out of the Police Department’s budget.
They are the problem.
