Davis Sayler’s monument at the Cortez Cemetery, courtesy of Jim Davenport. Davis H. Sayler was in Co. B, 7th Maryland Infantry, and served Cortez as its postmaster early in the 20th century. He was a director of the First National Bank of Cortez and a member of the Warren Post No. 89, GAR. He died in 1933.

James Thornhill’s Civil War monument at the Cortez Cemetery. Thornhill was from Buckingham County, Va., and served the Union in Co. G, 9th Missouri Cavalry. He died in 1891.

Walter Wasson monument at the Cortez Cemetery. He was a Union soldier in Co. H, 48th Wisconsin Infantry, came to La Plata County before 1885. He died here in 1893.
