I see that we are going to be asked to vote on allowing the school district to use the money that we approved for a sports stadium to be reallocated and used for the demolition of the old high school.
When we voted for the tax increase it included a new sports stadium and the demolition of the old high school. If this had not been promised as part of the package, the tax increase may have never been approved by the voter.
Our school officials either didn’t do their homework or they just outright lied to us to get what they wanted and now need to weasel their way out of it. Asking for the money to be reallocated is just wrong.
As I recall, the new sports stadium can’t be built for the estimated amount because of the location. Who is responsible for this? Wasn’t any kind of survey done to make sure the location was suitable? Why was it so important to buy this particular piece of land? Someone should answer these questions.
Our school officials haven’t delivered anything that was promised and now they are back to ask more from the taxpayer. I recall an editorial in the Cortez Journal arguing that the new school building would make a big difference and referred to what a great difference the new Cortez Journal building had made for the local newspaper.
Well, I see that the high school test scores are still in the gutter and where is the Cortez Journal? I do know that the taxpayer got stuck for both buildings. Tax money for the school was approved based on the promises made. If they can’t keep their word on what we are to get for our money, then we should not have to pay the tax.
