It’s hard to see anything positive about Donald Trump being the Republican presidential candidate, but his candidacy does provide a basic suitability test for down-ticket Republicans.
Trump’s defining characteristics are now clear for all to see: He is a massive liar, a raging narcissist and a welcher. He possesses no political ideology. He is largely ignorant of world affairs. He is thin-skinned, spiteful and traffics in insult, fear and bigotry to grab attention for himself.
The harm he could do our country as president is frightening. Quite a few Republican leaders have understood this and have repudiated Trump. But not our local state House representative, J. Paul Brown.
Brown practically leaped out of his boots to endorse Trump early on and, there being no public retraction since, we must presume he maintains that support. For this reason alone, Brown is unsuitable for re-election.
