Cascade Creek running dangerously high

Xcel not diverting water during pipeline construction
More water is flowing through the Cascade Creek waterfalls because Xcel Energy is not diverting water to this pipeline, which is under construction. A crew with Garney Construction was replacing pieces of the pipeline near Purgatory Resort on Friday. The pipe carries water from Cascade Creek to Electra Lake and the Tacoma Power Plant on the Animas River, where Xcel uses the water to generate electricity.
Cascade Creek south of U.S. Highway 550 was flowing fast Wednesday, making it dangerous. The water levels can vary by time of day and seasonally, said Patt Yeager Emmett, who grew up near the falls.
A culvert that carries water from Cascade Creek would normally be flowing fast, but because crews are replacing an old pipeline, it was low on Friday. The pipeline carries water from the creek to Electra Lake.
