The Dolores Lady Bears golf team begins the 2016 season on Tuesday at Adobe Creek National Golf Course in Fruita.
Pulling from Dolores High School, Montezuma-Cortez High School, as well as home-school students, the Lady Bears have seven members out for the team.
M-CHS senior and three-time state qualifier Kiselya Plewe returns after placing fourth at the state meet last year. And head coach Jeff Carr envisions her competing for the top spot again this season.
“I want Kiselya to contend at state,” said Carr. “If she brings her game to state, I think she is going to be really competitive.”
Keyana Matteson, Abigail Smith and Harlie Valdez also return to the team, and Carr said that they’ve already shown improvement from last season and that they will make the team more competitive.
Kaylee Bowie, Shundiin Kauffman and Kyra Allen round out the squad. Carr said that Allen brings an understanding to the game that will help her succeed, and that the athleticism of Kauffman and Bowie allows them to put good swings on the ball.
Even with just a handful of practices under their belts, Carr said that the Lady Bears have made improvements.
“I really think that we’re going to be competitive,” he said. “And if things go our way, I could see a couple of players qualifying for state this year.”
