Stoner plans to fight state lift closure
Stoner ski area will ask a district Judge today to stop the state of Colorado from closing down its number one T-bar.
The Colorado Tram Safety Board voted to suspend operation of Stoner’s number one T-bar last week, citing safety problems.
But the Sky Hi Ski Club voted this week to ask District Judge Bob Wilison to place a temporary restraining order on the tram board’s decision, at least until Stoner can submit certified modifications to the lift which would ensure its safety in the eyes of the board.
“It’s been sitting there in better shape than it’s been in the last five years,” said Ski Club President Gary Slavens, who said recent work on the T-bar has resolved earlier problems.
But Tram Board Vice-Chairman Gary Christian said the board’s decision to suspend Stoner lift license was based on safety.
“It was a pretty difficult decision for us,” said Christian. “But we considered this a serious enough problem to hold that license pending further submissions.”
Stoner officials, who contend the state board doesn’t fully understand the situation, will meet with District Judge Wilson at 9:30 a.m. today to ask for a 10-day temporary restraining order.
Archuleta is named Citizen of the Month
Gilbert Archuleta was recognized as Citizen of the Month by Mancos Valley Association Tuesday at the regular monthly meeting.
Archuleta had painstakingly scraped off six layers of paint from the front of the building on Grand Avenue revealing the beautiful scrolls of former years. He then painted the front of the building and outlined the original scrolls in a deep contrasting brown. The door of the building now complements the other decor of the historical building.
In other business the MVA heard from the committee on the Winter Carnival events which are held in coordination with the annual Snowmobile Club Races on February 19 and 20. These events include Cross-Country ski races, snow-sculp contest and Valentine Dance – all to help promote the Snowmobile Races.
Les Baker and Fred Shoemaker of Baker’s Rural Sanitation told of the new service being offered Mancos residents.
Reports were made and committees were appointed to help promote the “Spring Fling” to be held the month of May.
The next meeting of the Mancos Valley Association will be held March 1 at 12 noon at the Idle Spur.
VALENTINES DANCE
The second annual Valentine Dance will be held Friday, February 11 at the Idle Spur.
The money-making project to benefit the Mancos Valley Association will include an auction at 11 p.m. with Allen Randolph serving an auctioneer.
