On Feb. 6, Onward! will host a nine-hole mini-golf tournament at nine restaurant venues in downtown Cortez.
This event will raise funds for the Onward! endowment fund that distributes grants to nonprofits in the area.
The nine hole locations include: Pepperhead, Stonefish Sushi & More, San Juan Coffee, Loungin’ Lizard, Elm Street Tavern, Nero’s Italian Restaurant, Once Upon a Sandwich, Blondie’s Trophy Room & the Sunflower Theatre.
Each venue will build their own “hole” at their establishment for the course. The event starts at 4 p.m.
“Teams of four will putt their way around Main Street for a great cause,” said Chuck Forth, Onward! executive director.
Because it is the Saturday before the Super Bowl, participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite sports figure.
Onward! just completed the 2015 endowment grant cycle. A committee reviewed 28 applications and awarded grants for $8,740 to the following seven organizations: The Community Radio Project, Cortez Addictions Recover Services, Dolores River Boating Advocates, Mancos Public Library, Montelores Early Childhood Council (MECC), School Community Youth Collaborative, and Southwest Colorado Concerts.
“Each applicant listed need and purpose for applying for the grant,” Forth said. “The grants help a variety of different populations in our area.”
Grants go toward non-profit operating expenses or for events. For example, Southwest Colorado Concerts will use their grant money to pay for the Brassfire, Student Concert and Master Class to be held in may.
MECC’s grant will fund the Children’s Festival that offers free health and developmental screening to children.
The School Community Youth Collaborative will use their grant to help with expenses of the Teen Maze, which raises awareness of adolescent challenges.
And KSJD plans to use their grant to launch a news department.
Registration for the putt-putt tournament is available at the Onward! website (onwardfoundation.org) or at the Onward! office located at 33 N Chestnut. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, best hole and more.
Initial registration will be held at the Sunflower Theatre and then a shotgun start at 4:30. For more information, please email Nicci at [email protected] or call us at 970-565-9200.
