Eli Tomac is picking up steam.
Riding in the 450 Class of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, the Cortez native picked up his second win of the season – and second in three weeks – at Washougal National on Saturday.
Current points leader Ken Roczen led all 16 laps to win the first moto, but Tomac finished in second and then bounced back in the second moto, leading 13 laps to win and finish first overall for the event.
“The first moto was a little funky,” Tomac told the Associated Press. “I was a little off. I was tight in the first half and came around in the second half. I got to the front pretty quick in the second moto, and when I got to Kenny, he kind of just gave it to me. I took it and laid it down after that. I was just in a good rhythm.”
Although Tomac won the event, he and Roczen each scored 47 points, so Roczen still holds a 55-point lead in the overall standings.
The pair are running away from the rest of the field, though.
Roczen is in first with 434 points, Tomac is in second with 379 and Marvin Musquin, of La Reole, France, is well behind, in third place with 283 points.
There are three races left in the series.
After a two-week break, the riders will return to action for the Unadilla National in New Berlin, New York on Saturday, August 13.
