I recently watched a documentary on the current social and political structure of Mali, a few weeks before the latest atrocity. In it the people were lamenting their position. Catering to wealthy white tourists while in poverty can be rough after all. Even tougher when your government is more worried about protecting a hippo, than it’s own people.
The terrorist attacks are clearly trying to use this situation. So in support of the victims in Mali, and locals everywhere trying to deal with wealthy tourists and corrupt civil servants while being abused by their own government, I support Mali by saying: “Down with your hippo! Up with the people! The hippo will always be there, and so will we”
