Sophomore Sadee Threlkeld moved to 5-0 at No. 2 singles for the Lady Panthers tennis team, but that was the only win for Montezuma-Cortez High School in a 6-1 defeat Tuesday afternoon in Durango.
M-CHS (3-2, 0-1 4A Southwestern League) got Threlkelds 6-5, 0-6, 10-3 win over Ellen Southworth of the Lady Demons in a hard fought match. At No. 1 and No. 3 singles, it was Durangos Eva Lou Edwards defeating Abbi Pickens, 6-1, 6-0, and Jamie Wahzek downed Brie Odell, 6-1, 6-0.
The Lady Demons swept the doubles matches, but the previously unbeaten No. 1 doubles team of Andi Pickens and Jessica Gonzalez almost won again for M-CHS. Sierra Lillard and Kari Bjorlin dominated the first set 6-1 for Durango. But Andi Pickens and Gonzalez took set two, 6-2. In the 10-point tiebreaker set, the Lady Panthers duo had a 4-2 lead but lost the set 10-8, which gave the match to Lillard and Bjorlin.
Kelsey Smith and Lauren Adams beat Raena Conklin and Sarah Baker at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2. Gina Gates and Hannah Davies knocked off Roni Shaner and Charley Stewart at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 6-0. Ty Jameson and Mel Hamizron bested Jordan Valdez and Ysaline Spaey at No. 4 doubles, 6-1, 6-2.
