How does Durango get its water?

$50 million water plant needed to back up current facility
City of Durango water passes through multiple treatment steps to remove unwanted material and kill potentially harmful organisms before being distributed for public consumption.
1. Water from rivers is screened before being diverted to reservoirs. 2. Water is held in the 74 million gallon Terminal Reservoir before being sent to the treatment facility.
3. Coagulants are added so that fine solids stick together. As solids bind, they become heavy and sink to the bottom of the tank.
4. Solids are mixed to strengthen the binding of small particles. As they bind, they get larger and heavier and sink to the bottom.
5. Water is slowly moved through sediment basins. As the speed of the water slows, contaminants settle to the bottom.
6. Water is passed through fine filters to trap remaining particles.
7. Disinfectants are added. 8. Water is contained in the clearwell to allow time for disinfectants to kill harmful bacteria.
9. Finished water is stored in several tanks throughout the city. 10. The main tank holds 7.2 million gallons ready for distribution.
