A total of nine candidates are seeking election to one of two three-year terms on the Ute Mountain Ute tribal council.
The election, open to tribal members 18 and older, is held Friday, Oct. 9. Polls at the Towaoc Community Center are open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Gary Hayes and Juanita Plentyholes currently hold the tribal council seats up for election. Hayes isn’t seeking re-election. Hoping to retain her post, Plentyholes will face challengers Marissa Box, Rudy Hammond, Ulysses Lang, Conrad Jacket, Emeline Casey, Bradley Hight, Christine Lehi and Davis Wing.
Tribal council candidates must be 25 or older and be a permanent resident of the Ute Mountain Ute voting precinct. Convicted felons are ineligible for office.
Required to submit a letter of interest to Chairman Manuel Heart, candidates also paid a non-refundable $200 filing fee. The deadline to apply was Aug. 10.
Attempts to obtain biographical information on all nine candidates were unsuccessful.
