The Montezuma-Cortez softball team entered the Delta Tournament looking to build on its 1-3 record.
The Panthers added a notch in the win column in their first game against Rifle (3-9) on Friday, thanks to an offensive outpouring.
M-CHS struck early with four runs in the first inning, then after plating another in the fifth inning, they tacked on another four runs in the sixth.
The Panthers held Rifle to one run in the first, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to claim a 9-4 win.
On Saturday, M-CHS took on Palisade (6-4-1) and Montrose (5-5), coming up short in both games.
The Panthers’ offense was quieted against Palisade and held to only three hits.
They were able to score in the first inning and led 1-0 for most of the game.
But the Bulldogs jumped ahead with two runs in the sixth inning, and the Panthers couldn’t put together a rally in the final frame, losing 2-1.
M-CHS again found itself with an early lead against Montrose, breaking out to a 6-2 advantage after two innings. But they were shut out for the remainder of the contest and Montrose methodically drove in runs to win 12-6.
The Panthers have almost a week off, with their next game in Fruita Monument (5-5) on Friday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m.
