The status of the coaching staff at Montezuma-Cortez High School was uncertain Monday after head coach Dave Wagner announced that three assistant coaches had resigned.
According to Wagner, assistants Tim Robinson, Scott Conklin and Kirby Case had all resigned between Saturday and Monday morning.
There were also questions surrounding defensive coordinator Keith Mikhail’s role with the team after a disagreement with Wagner.
“I gave him my opinion,” Mikhail said. “And when I voiced my opinion he said, ‘It’s my team.’”
“We had disagreements about the offense,” Wagner said. “But as head coach, ultimately, it’s my decision.”
However, on Monday night, Mikhail and assistants Robinson, Conklin and Case were on the sidelines during the junior varsity game against Ignacio, but Wagner was in the bleachers.
“I got fired today at 3:45,” Wagner said at the game. “That was it. (M-CHS Principal Jason Wayman) called me in and said I’m no longer the head coach.”
When he was asked why he was let go, Wagner said, “I lost four of my coaches, and that was pretty much it.”
Wayman was unavailable for comment, and athletic director Stacey Hall said Monday morning that she would not confirm the resignations, and she declined to comment further when asked on Monday night.
