The Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency, otherwise known as 4CORE, is expanding to include an office in the Wilson Building at 10 W. Main St., Suite 110 in Cortez. The office will be staffed two days a week to provide information to residents and businesses on resource efficiency in the Montelores region of Southwest Colorado.
4CORE is a Durango-based nonprofit organization that provides coalition-building and facilitation to help reduce the communitys energy use and promote renewable energy resources. 4COREs mission is to advance resource efficiency and be Southwest Colorados resource conservation hub, inspiring communities to become resilient. 4CORE is managed by a team of paid staff, volunteers and student interns with the oversight and guidance of a volunteer board of directors.
Our goal of having an office in Montezuma County is for me to get to know the people a bit more and to get to understand what their need is energywise, more so than I could do in Durango, said 4CORE Program Specialist Heather Wyatt.
Wyatt will staff the new 4CORE office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays as the community energy coordinator for Montezuma and Dolores counties.
4CORE can help low-income residents make cost-effective, energy efficient improvements and upgrades in their homes. Weatherization improvements can include insulation in attics and walls, furnace replacement, furnace safety testing, refrigerator replacement, sealing air leaks, compact fluorescent light bulbs, energy audits, and storm windows and doors.
Besides helping those who wish to apply for the low-income weatherization services provided by 4CORE, Wyatt can give suggestions to residents and businesses about how to save money.
I can help by connecting them with tax incentives and rebates that are available for energy efficient upgrades, as well as help them get in touch with other people that can continue to help them save money, Wyatt said.
She said she will also be available to people who just want more information on how to be more energy efficient.
A grand opening for the Cortez 4CORE branch office will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. today, March 22. The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, food and prizes.
4CORE is funded by the Governors Energy Office, Empire Electric Association, La Plata County, the town of Ignacio, La Plata Electric Association and the city of Durango.
