The Taco Bell in Cortez celebrated a birthday recently – 20 years.
And as is tradition in the franchise industry, the 20-year mark is celebrated with a remodel.
Crews last week started tearing up the store, beginning with the arch on the front, in what should be a monthlong remodel process.
“At 20 years, the franchise agreement states we have to do a remodel,” said James Rich, owner of the store.
Rich asks for some patience from local customers.
“We will remain open,” he said. “Some days, the drive-through will only be open, on others the walk-in will only be open.”
Over the expected 5-week-long remodel, Rich said the store will likely be closed between one to three days, depending on construction.
“We ask for patience and please excuse our mess,” he said.
The Taco Bell is expected to get a whole new modern look, inside and out.
“It should take on a whole new image,” Rich said.
The Taco Bell in Shiprock, also owned by Rich, recently went through the same remodel.
In addition, new equipment will go inside, as well as some new high-tech features, including a order confirmation board in the drive-through.
“The upgrades will help us better serve our customers,” he said. “The order confirmation board helps with order accuracy.”
Rich owns the store with his wife and family. They own eight Taco Bells, including the one in Cortez, Shiprock and Durango. They also own Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, including the one in Cortez. Rich currently lives with his family in Gallup, where the headquarters of their business, High Desert QSRs, is located.
“We enjoy quick service restaurants,” he said. “We are most proud of offering employment opportunities. A lot of our employees, this is their first job.”
High Desert QSRs employs 350.
Rich said the new look of the restaurant will make downtown more attractive.
“It really has a positive impact on the community,” he said. “It will look nice.”
The store will stay the same size.
