After winning six of eight non-conference games to begin its season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School baseball team opened league play with two consecutive losses.
The first of those losses came on the road on April 3 when the Panthers fell to Grand Junction Central, 8-2.
The score was tied 1-1 before Central scored three runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to break the game open.
M-CHS managed six hits and made two errors, while Central cracked 12 hits and made two errors.
Playing its second game of the weekend on the road against Fruita Monument on April 4, M-CHS lost 7-4.
Fruita Monument jumped on the board early, two runs in the first inning off of M-CHS starting pitcher Dayne Black. Fruita then added three more runs in the second inning.
Junior Andrew Laymon led the Panthers at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Ian Roberson had two hits and one RBI.
With their record now at 6-4 on the season, M-CHS will return to the practice field to prepare for its next game, which will take place at home against Grand Junction High School on April 10.
