Bureaucrats came to Southwestern Colorado last Thursday to present residents their plans for studying, at the direction of the Congress of the United States, the question of whether or not the Dolores River should be recommended for wild, scenic or recreational status. The meeting was attended by a large number of persons including such interest groups as wild river enthusiasts, ranchers lumbering, mining, farmers and just plain nosey, such as newspaper reporters.
Towaoc police officer Phillip Lopez was fatally wounded Tuesday evening by Parley Wells, of Towaoc, who in turn shot himself. Wells died at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Wednesday afternoon. An investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In Wolf Creek, season total snowfall had broken all records. As of last Thursday with a total of 648 inches. The old mark was 619 inches.
The full staff of Southwest Memorial Hospital has gone on record as endorsing the proposed hospital district that will come up for vote April 15 throughout the county. Dolores area residents are invited to an informational meeting to discuss the hospital district that will be held on Tuesday, April 8 starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Dolores State Bank. Joe Tipton and Jack Kinkade of the steering committee, as well as Dr. E. G. Merritt and Dr. Robert Carlson, will be present to inform the public of the need for the district and to answer any questions which may arise about the plan.
Town Board members approved an easement for power lines over the dump groudns at their regular meeting held Monday. They also completed application for electric service to the new water pumps and filter that are to be installed this spring as part of the town's water improvement program. In other business, they approved payment of $11,800 for the new backhoe and discussed an invitation to attend a state highway meeting.
The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be held in the Dolores Elementary school all purpose room on Sunday. New members to be inducted are Leslie Ward, Don Setser, Carol Roelfs and Delene Johnson.
Mr. and Mrs. Rick Randolph are the proud new parents of a baby girl born Monday morning, April 1. She weighed 7 lb. 12 oz. and has been named Kelly Rae. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jacques of Summit Ridge and paternal Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Randolph of Lebanon.
Snowy weather and slick roads have not contributed to many accidents n this area during the past week with only two investigated by the State Patrol.
