The Pinon Project

The Pinon Project is an integral part of the local community, serving Southwest Colorado since 1994.
Located on North Elm Street in Cortez, the organization is a member of the The Family Resource Center Association, a network of 23 resource centers around the state.
Upon entering the reception area, prospective clients are greeted by friendly staff and the organizations’s mission statement emblazoned in script over the reception desk: “The Pinon Project Family Resource Center strengthens our community by providing comprehensive services for children and families.”
Founded as the result of a collaboration between local community groups and Colorado Trust’s Healthy Communities Initiative in the early 1990s, today the Pinon Project annually serves more than 3,000 families and their children. The Pinon staff understands that healthy families are the foundation of strong communities, and all of its services are designed to strengthen families through education and support services.
The Tree House Early Learning Center, one of Pinon’s programs, provides a safe environment where children 6 weeks to 12 years can learn and play, and it offers programs to help parents understand the important role they play in their child’s education.
The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) is a consortium of programs. They include a mentoring program for kids, a restorative justice arm that works with youngsters who have had a run-in with the law. The Strengthening Families Parenting Program works with kids 12-17 and their parents to helps develop communication and parenting skills important for navigating what can be a tumultuous time. Personal finance classes are offered, and staff can help families navigate the health care system and deal with emergencies.
Family is the focus at the Pinon Project, and over the years, thousands of families have benefited from the services it provides.

Supported primarily through grants and fundraisers, Pinon Project is hosting a new fundraiser this year with “The Voice — Sing Out of Families.”
