Opening its season with road games against Hotchkiss High School and Frederick High School, the Montezuma-Cortez High School baseball team came away with one win.
The Panthers victory came over Hotchkiss on March 6 when the Panthers, buoyed by solid pitcher performances from senior Konnar McGee and junior Cordell Ridings, walked away with an 8-7 win.
McGee started the game and allowed two earned runs over four innings and Ridings pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Senior Bridger Brenner went 3-4 at the plate and drove in one run. Ian Roberson, Gaudy Castillo, Taren Lanier and McGee also drove in one run each.
Following their win over Hotchkiss, the Panthers played against Frederick on March 7 and lost 15-8.
M-CHS led 6-5 after the fifth inning, but Frederick outscored the Panthers 10-2 over the final two innings to secure the victory.
Raudy Castillo hit a triple and drove in three runs and Ian Roberson had two hits and drove in two runs for the Panthers.
With its record now at 1-1 on the season, M-CHS will practice three times before playing three home games in the Cortez Tournament, which will take place March 12-14, at the Parque de Vida fields.
