These conferences can be nerve-wracking. First, remember that this is a great time to build a relationship with your child's teacher. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to write them down before you attend the conference, because it is easy to get sidetracked once the conference starts.
Listen to the teacher talk. It's amazing what you can learn.
Thank teachers for their hard work and ask, "How can I help you make my child succeed?"
Often a few things done at home can help your child and teacher do wonders.
Book fair
The Dolores PTA sponsors the Scholastic Book Fair from Feb. 10-13. Students may go to the fair during the week. It will be open to the public during elementary school parent/teacher conferences Thursday evening and Friday morning.
News from Sherri Maxwell
The Colorado Department of Education just released a user-friendly guide to the Colorado Academic Standards for grades 6-12 in English (with Spanish translations, forthcoming). Both the K-5 and 6-12 guides are available on the "Standards and Instructional Support" web page. The guides are a page long for each grade and can help families understand the goals and outcomes of the standards.
The guides are at www.cde.state.co.us/standardsandinstruction/guidestostandards.
After school tutoring
The Dolores School District, in partnership with the Three Rivers Education Foundation, is launching a great new way to improve student reading. Building Communities that Support Children's Reading provides 32 hours of free after-school reading tutoring for your child. Children receive two one-hour tutoring sessions per week with a teacher at Dolores Elementary. Sign up at the Dolores Elementary office.
