Community college offers EMT classes
Southwest Colorado Community College has added two new classes for emergency medical technicians.
The college will hold an EMT refresher course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays from Feb. 7 to March 14 at Southwest Colorado Community College’s East Campus in Durango.
The course will meet the 24 to 36 hours of continuing-education requirements for the Colorado or National Registry’s recertification of emergency medical service providers.
The college also will offer an EMT internship course. Students in this course will spend 96 hours working on an ambulance and participating with the ambulance’s crew on the calls it receives.
The internship course will be held from Monday to May 16. Students can choose to be placed with an ambulance crew at a variety of locations throughout Colorado.
Each class is limited to 12 students. Students in the internship course must have completed an emergency medical technician course but are not required to be certified EMTs to enroll.

The college also will hold another seven-week CNA training program at the college’s East Campus in Durango, March 31 to May 15. Students will meet from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday to Friday.
Certified nurse aides are in high demand locally. Students will learn the skills they need to help hospital patients, long-term care residents and home health-care clients with daily activities.
