The Dolores Public Library invites the community to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 1-4 p.m.
The Library Board of Directors and staff will be throwing a 1956-themed outdoor bash in the parking lot, featuring free food, live music from Wild Billy Kneebone, prize giveaways and general fun with friends and neighbors.
The library will also be open regular hours, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the public is encouraged to stop in and see what’s new.
In addition to the dozens of new fiction and nonfiction book titles added this year, Dolores Public Library has added an array of new, non-traditional items to its shelves: new DVDs, educational tablets for kids, board games, outdoor lawn games, a sewing machine, a Colorado State Parks pass, Nature Packs, and most recently, two Mobo Cruiser bikes for kids. It’s all available for use with only a library card.
Dolores Public Library’s 60th Anniversary Party ties into Outside the Lines, a global initiative designed to reintroduce libraries to their local communities. From Sept. 11-17, 2016, organizations will host events and campaigns worldwide designed to get people thinking – and talking – about libraries in a whole new way.
In recent years, libraries around the country have responded to changing needs and desires of patrons by transforming from book repositories into hubs dynamic centers for knowledge, personal growth, and discovery.
Dolores Public Library was founded in 1956 in a single room in town hall. In 1986, it moved into a larger space in the renovated firehouse and jail, and in 2005 its current home on Railroad Avenue was completed. Today, Dolores Public Library has over 20,000 items on its shelves and continues to serve hundreds of community members every week.
