On a per-share basis, the Denver-based company said it had a loss of $2.19. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 5 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 23 cents per share.
The independent oil and gas company posted revenue of $443.8 million in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $339.4 million.
SM Energy shares have nearly tripled since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $17.80, climbing fivefold in the last 12 months.
