National Public Lands Day will be celebrated early at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
On Sept. 13 join the San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with BLM from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Goodman Point. This year, National Public Lands Day is being observed early due to a Wilderness 50th Anniversary Walk, scheduled Sept. 27.
This year will mark the 14th anniversary of National Public Lands Day projects on Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Projects are designed to provide education and stewardship opportunities.
This year’s project will consist of reclamation work at a popular dispersed camping site along one of the canyon rims. Visitors have left trash, tires and developed social trails and ATV routes that must be reclaimed. The work was started this spring by students from Missouri. The volunteers, this fall, will continue with closing off illegal routes, campfire ring cleanup, removal of about 30 tires and trash pickup.
Volunteers must register and need to dress for safety, wearing long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and bring their own water and snacks for the day. Lunch will be provided by SJMA.
