The Mancos school board will host an informal community meet-and-greet next week with the final five candidates for the district’s superintendent position.
The meeting has been scheduled for April 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the campus cafeteria.
Current Superintendent Brian Hanson announced last summer that he would retire at the end of the 2021 school year.
Four of the five candidates will be there in person, and one will be call via Zoom from North Carolina. The three outside candidates come from the Front Range, North Carolina and Oklahoma.
Former Montezuma-Cortez High School Principal Jason Wayman and current Mancos High School Principal John Marchino are also in contention for the leadership role.
School board members will attend, but the informal gathering primarily will be an opportunity for one-on-one interactions with the candidates. Locals also may share their opinions with school board members and say which candidates they prefer.
“We encourage everyone to come,” said Pamela Coppinger president of Mancos School District RE-6 Board of Education. “We just want to see how they interact with the community and how the community interacts with them.”
According to Coppinger, the board will hold a special meeting the following Monday to likely make a final decision.
Masks will be required. The meet and greet can be moved out to the courtyard to provide more space if necessary.
