Construction crews at Dolores schools are coming along nicely. The science building and addition to the elementary school look nearly completed on the outside. We all know there is still a lot more work to be done. Visit www.doloresschools.org for detailed information on the project. Click on the construction banner on the main page, and it will take you to a page with loads of information. It may take awhile to load, but it's full on maps and pictures of the construction process. It's amazing to watch the transformation. Just a little over a month ago, the science building didn't have a roof.

Football camp coming soon

The Four Corners Football Camp is just around the corner, June 20 and 21 from 8 to 11 a.m. Children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are encouraged to attend. Cost is $35 and includes a camp T-shirt. Proceeds go to the Dolores and Cortez High School Football teams. Registration forms can be found at the Cortez Rec Center.

Dolores goes to D.C.

Students and chaperones reported a great time in Washington, D.C., last week. They got to see a lot of monuments (Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, MLK Jr., FDR, Iwo Jima, WWII, Vietnam, Korean War, ), and went to Arlington and saw JFK's grave and the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They hit most of the Smithsonian Museums and the National Archives, where they saw the real Declaration of Independence. The group went to Ford's Theatre, Mt. Vernon, the Library of Congress, and the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court. The group also went to the Zoological Park and saw the baby panda and baby lions, according to history teacher and chaperone Pam Pacheco. Twenty Dolores students and four chaperones went on the four-day whirlwind trip.

Pacheco said: "As for what was the most exciting, I can't pick just one thing ... I was awestruck when I stood where MLK Jr. stood when he gave his 'I have a dream ...' speech. I felt so much thanks in Arlington and I cried at the Vietnam Memorial. At the zoo, I felt like I was five and I desperately wanted to take home the baby panda! The kids were great on the trip and I feel like everyone had fun."

Be thinking about Buddy

Don't forget about Buddy the Reading Dog, who is making appearances on Mondays at the Dolores Public Library. The library has 15-minute appointments available from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Please come to the library if you'd like to do this. Buddy is a real sweetheart, and Dolores is fortunate to have this trained dog to come in and listen to children read, which helps build fluency.
