The city of Farmington’s Clean and Beautiful program will begin its annual Christmas tree recycling program Dec. 25.
The city has been recycling Christmas trees for the last 18 years, said Debbie Homer, Clean and Beautiful specialist.
According to a news release from the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, all Farmington residents who want to recycle their Christmas trees can drop off the trees at Berg Park parking lot at Scott Avenue and San Juan Boulevard or at Fire Station No. 5, 609 E. 30th St.
Trees will be loaded into a chipper. The wood chips will be used for landscaping in city parks, Homer said.
“This event helps reduce the number of whole trees going into the landfill thus helping to reduce the amount of space taken up,” Homer said. “Also, the tree chips help to reduce water usage by plants in parks and also improve the appearance.”
All recycled trees must be cleared of decorations and not be flocked, or coated with fake snow powder.
Trees can be dropped off at no cost from Dec. 25 to Jan. 11.
