A grand finale
The Dolores High School graduation was an amazing event this year. Dave Hopcia gave a moving speech about each of the 38 graduates. The speech brought laughs and tears and a standing ovation.
Highlights of the ceremony were: Hopcia changing into a tie-dyed jacked, bringing tears to the audience when discussing the wonderful qualities of every student and when the entire class put on a fake mustaches to look like Hopcia. It was a joy to see how close this class was and how excited they are for their futures. DHS should be proud.
A world of thanks
Brandon Thurston, secondary principal of the Dolores Schools, wanted to send out a few thank yous: "I would like to begin by thanking everyone for supporting our students and staff to make the 2014-2014 school year such a success. We had several parents step up this year and start a Secondary Parent Teacher Organization. This is made up of a group of dedicated parents with the mission of helping teachers help our kids. They are looking for volunteers to help in fundraising efforts and other contributions around the school. Please see the Secondary Office if you are interested in joining.
"The next round of thank yous goes out to two wonderful individuals who saw a need in our school and through anonymous donations of $10,000 each, we were able to bring back the drama program and install a huge projection system for the main gym.
"The theater department put on a production of "Who's Crazy Now" . This is a hilarious play about a teachers insane asylum. The cast did a fantastic job and are looking forward to future productions.
The projection system that was donated was used at this years' graduation ceremony. It was donated for events like graduation and other large events. The students and staff are already excited about other opportunities to use such a great resource.
A special thank you goes out to Mr. Ron Hurd for his ongoing support with our sound system. Mr. Hurd has stepped up for numerous events to make sure we have the best sound possible. He has volunteered both time and equipment. His time and expertise have been greatly appreciated.
Lastly, I would like to thank the dedicated staff here in the Dolores Secondary Schools. Our staff work hard each year to ensure they provide the best education possible."
Update from the elementary
The last week of school was very busy with the county wide track meet for fourth and fifth graders on Monday. Our students looked sharp with the matching Dolores Elementary T-shirts provided by the PTA. As usual, Dolores students made a great showing with lots of first, second and third place winners. The younger grades had a fun filled field day on Tuesday.
Our annual talent show was held on the last day of school. Once again it was a rousing success with over 30 students performing for their peers. After the talent show we had a brown bag picnic on the lawn with families and then closed out the year with our final Character Day Celebration. Hayden Tallmadge was awarded the Presidential Academic Achievement Award. Justin Brunner was awarded the Math Olympiad trophy for scoring in the top ten percent nationally during competition. We also had 12 students with perfect attendance for the year, the most we have ever had!
Thanks to the students, parents, and staff of Dolores Elementary School for a great year! Everyone's hard work and dedication makes our school a great place to learn, work and grow.
