The Journal
Bonnie Schmader, a Mancos resident, was recently published in the summer issue of Woods Reader magazine.
Her article, “Acoustical Woods: Connecting Native American flutes and forests,” traces the history and tonal qualities of these unique wooden instruments.
“Just as people go to the woods for quiet, solitude and healing, many find that playing the flute is a way to heal, to quiet the mind, to open the heart and to discover new thoughts and feelings that can be transformative,” she writes, adding that “when you play the Native American style flute, you carry a piece of the forest with you, wherever you are.”
Schmader has also composed an original piece, which can be heard in the Woods Reader audio collection at www.WoodsReader.com.
Containing firsthand stories about woodlands, wood crafting, researched information, poetry and beautiful images, Woods Reader is a quarterly magazine designed for those who love the woods and enjoy relaxing and interesting stories.
