Ken & Sue’s restaurant, a popular downtown Durango eatery, was raided Wednesday by agents with the Internal Revenue Service’s criminal investigations unit.
Calls to owners Ken and Sue Fusco were not returned Wednesday.
Agents outside the restaurant at 636 Main Ave., who were not in full uniform but wore badges and vests, declined to comment, other than to confirm they were with the IRS’s criminal investigations unit.
Karen Gurgle, a special agent and spokeswoman for the IRS in Denver, told The Durango Herald, “We were there on official business executing a warrant.”
Gurgle said she could not comment on the situation further.
The agents arrived at the scene mid-morning and left about 2 p.m. About four or five agents could be seen outside the restaurant. No customers were inside. And calls to the restaurant kept ringing.
An employee on scene, who declined to be identified, said the restaurant would be open for dinner. He referred all questions to the owners.
Ken & Sue’s has been a mainstay in Durango for more than 20 years. Earlier this year, the Fuscos announced they planned to retire and put the business up for sale for $575,000.
According to the advertisement for the restaurant’s sale, Ken & Sue’s has a gross revenue of $2.5 million. The selling agent for the business said Wednesday it has not yet sold.
