In Cortez, I watched two apparently opposing events collide on Main Street. I saw the peaceful, justice-promoting marchers. I also saw and heard the loud noise and political flags of the so-called blue line protesters as they drove their pickup trucks and motorcycles up and down Main. As far as I could tell, these folks were all white and all political allies of Trump’s racist ideas. The Journal said they are showing their support for our first responders and the police.
The marchers are not against first responders, that is why they wear masks and are socially distanced. They are not against police, they are against police brutality. Does this mean the ones with loud trucks and motorcycles waving Trump flags and other symbols of white supremacy are in support of violence and brutality?
I believe our county’s law-abiding citizens are not in support of violence and brutality but want what is best for all. I am saddened to see and hear the noisy faction that insists on protesting against equality and reform of police violence.
We all must rise above the status quo and above this attitude of white privilege and come together against violence and hate. We are a small county, we need love and to honor everyone’s right to a life of dignity and respect.
