The articles in The Journal concerning the wood bat tournament hosted in Cortez were very interesting. One quoted Durango pitcher Gage Mestas, who pointed out that other tournaments he’s played this year had strict safety protocols in place for those watching the games. At Parque de Vida, there were no masks and no social distancing between family groups.
As of Aug. 1, Montezuma County had recorded 107 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with four deaths. When Telluride decided not to host the tournament this year, Montezuma County stepped in.
I can certainly see why the county wanted to take advantage of the situation. But Montezuma County did so with absolutely no safety protocols in place for the fans. It’s hard for me to view the county’s action as anything other than recklessly irresponsible.
