The Cox Canyon fire burning near the Colorado-New Mexico line north of Aztec was about 130 acres in size as of Sunday morning, according to the San Juan County Fire Department.
The blaze started Saturday and was burning in a remote area mostly on New Mexico state land. Fire crews used fire retardant Saturday afternoon to box in the fire, which was largely successful at keeping fire growth minimal, said Jill Aragon, spokeswoman with the Bureau of Land Management, on Sunday afternoon.
“There hasn’t been much movement on it overnight, so they’re pretty happy with where they’re sitting right now,” she said.
The fire was considered contained Sunday afternoon, she said.

“We will say it is contained, but that may change tonight,” Aragon said.
Three fire crews, each with 20 people, were assigned to the fire. Two helicopters, a large and a small air tanker, and 10 fire engines were also working the blaze.
No homes were in immediate danger. Likewise, no air-quality warnings had been issued for the region.
