Like a freight train intent on reaching its destination, Montezuma-Cortez High School junior Seager Oliver just keeps on rolling.
Oliver advances to state finals
Competing in the semifinals of the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 21, Oliver was again dominant, beating Pueblo South’s Mark Espinoza to advance to the state finals.
Outmuscling Espinoza, Oliver continually overpowered his overmatched opponent, taking a 5-2 lead in the first period before eventually pulling away for a 10-2 win.
With the victory, Oliver moves into the state finals where he will face Erie High School’s Ladd Bunker (42-4).
Gross eliminated from consolation bracket
Capping off a stellar season, Levi Gross won his opening match in the consolation bracket on Feb. 21 before losing later in the day to be eliminated from the state tournament.
After opening the day with a pin victory over Weld Central’s Lyle Cooksey (29-10), Gross lost later in the day to Thompson Valley’s Matt Berg (20-3).
With the loss, Gross concludes his stellar season with a 30-16 record.
Ramos eliminated after consecutive losses
Hoping to advance through the state tournament, 145-pound junior Justice Ramos ran into tough competition.
After opening the day with a 4-2 loss to Pueblo West’s Randall Baker, Ramos dropped a 7-1 decision to Northridge’s Erick Palomino-Romero in consolations.
With the losses, Ramos concluded his outstanding season with a 30-14 record.
