Americans, especially Westerners, have always adapted to economic crises. When the interstate highway system abandoned towns along Route 66, the small towns adapted and became tourist destinations, such as Seligman, Arizona with Angel & Vilma’s popular Route 66 Gift Shop.
Now along Route 66, any number of old cars and trucks have been repurposed and redecorated for tourists who love to take selfies next to vintage American autos. This car has Santa at the wheel. Route 66 has experienced a renaissance. Because of the coronavirus, many Americans claim they want to leave cities. Perhaps they’ll move to the rural Southwest and enjoy traveling the Mother Road.
