A time machine, a personal triumph and a timeless classic, topped off by some improvisational twists.
No doubt, the Montezuma-Cortez High School Theatre Department’s latest production had a little bit of everything, leaving those lucky enough to attend clearly thrilled.
‘Doctor, Doctor’
Kicking off the “One Act Festival” was M-CHS drama student Bryce Stanley’s Doctor, Doctor, which, brought elements of a science fiction movie to the stage.
Based on the popular television series, Dr. Who, Doctor, Doctor began after the Doctor (Sheldon Harris) climbed aboard a time machine to be transported to another realm.
Highlighting the production was outstanding acting by several cast members, including Anakay Hanold (The Teller) and Xavier Eddy (Doctor 2).
While the plot was sometimes difficult to follow, an eye-catching stage-set, as well as a great deal of catchy music, rendered the production a rousing success.
‘Love’s Quest Through Darkness’
Next on the “One Act Festival’s” set list was M-CHS drama student Miaya Duran’s Love’s Quest Through Darkness.
Based on Greek mythology, Duran’s wonderfully written One Act told the story of a Prince’s quest to rid himself of a curse that kills every woman with whom he falls in love.
Combining elements of a classic tragedy with several humorous scenes, Love’s Quest Through Darkness left audience members impressed with Duran’s writing acumen.
‘Red Riding Hood’
Concluding the night of One Acts was M-CHS drama student Kaylee Brinkerhoff’s somewhat dark rendition of Red Riding Hood.
Based on the classic story of a girl, a picnic basket and a trip to Grandma’s house, Brinkerhoff’s version of “Red Riding Hood” replaced the wolf with a serial killer played by Aaron Lewis.
Along with several dark murder scenes, Red Riding Hood’s humoristic elements, highlighted by a wonderful dance by Grandma (Kelli Cook), left audience members clamoring for more.
‘The Impulsive Improvisers’
Mixed between the One Acts were several laughter-inducing improvisational performances by the Theatre Department’s improvisational group, The Impulsive Improvisers.
Highlighting the improvisational performances was the off the cuff acting of M-CHS senior Todd Underwood, whose characterization of Rapunzel, The Little Mermaid and others left audience howling.
“I hope you enjoyed the performances,” said cast members as audience members exited.
Rest assured, those in attendance left impressed.
