When team numbers are low, dual wins are difficult to come by, yet the Dolores Bears wrestling team continues to find ways to notch victories.
Kicking off last week's wresting action with a road dual against Monticello on Jan. 15, the Bears won three matches, lost four matches and forfeited several others in a lopsided loss.
Leading the way for the Bears with wins were freshman Brandon Ward, junior Guy Wallace and senior Ethen Upton.
Falling just short of victory was Bears' senior Deano Valdez.
Hoping to return to their winning ways on Jan. 17, the Bears traveled to Shiprock for a series of five duals and finished with a 3-2 record.
Highlighting the Shiprock duals for the Bears were Wallace, Valdez and Upton, who each finished with 5-0 records on the day.
Bears freshman Tristan Medina finished 4-1, Ward finished 3-2, and freshman Brandon Hopcia got his first varsity win.
"The boys did very well. I was really happy with the results," said Bears' head coach Leo Garand.
Next up for the Bears is the always-tough Sand Devil Tournament, which will be held Jan. 24-25 in Page, Ariz.
We're going to see some of Utah and Arizona's best out there," said Garand. "This will be our last big test before we head into regionals."
