Prep sports fans lucky enough to attend athletic events in Dove Creek know all too well that the Dove Creek cheerleading team is excellent.
Following the 2A state cheerleading competition, the rest of Colorado now knows as well.
Competing at the Denver Coliseum on Dec. 7, Bulldogs cheerleaders were nothing short of spectacular, finishing third overall.
“I thought they did amazing,” said head coach Kati Banks of her team. “We had a really rough year. We had a lot of injuries and sickness.”
According to Banks, the Bulldogs missed out on a state championship by the narrowest of margins, finishing just .006 points behind state-champion Cheyenne Wells.
“I’m a little disappointed in the scoring up there,” explained Banks, who felt like her team may have been the best.
Even without the state championship that they so desired however, Banks noted that the contributions made by seniors Corissa Guynes, Jessica Guynes, Shelbie Knuckles, Kristin Knuckles, Madison McCourt, Brezzie Spangler and Caitlyn Ayers will not soon be forgotten.
“They’re just amazing,” said Banks of the group. “It’s just that Dove Creek soul. They’re four sport athletes, great students and very goal oriented. They’re just great kids.”
With the competition season now behind them, Dove Creek’s cheerleading team will continue to root the Bulldogs on throughout the winter sports season before beginning preparations for next season sometime in the spring.
“Even though we lose half of our team, we should be strong next year,” said Banks.
