Although its final game of the regular season might have been closer than it would have liked, the Mancos High School boys’ basketball team did more than enough to win when it went on the road and defeated Telluride High School, 59-46, on Feb. 21.
Senior Caden Showalter led the Bluejays with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Connor Showalter chipped in 15 points. Sophomore Evan Sehnert scored 12 points, and senior Anthony Medina scored 11 points for Mancos.
The Bluejays led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter before a tough second quarter stretch put Mancos behind 25-21 at halftime.
After a spirited halftime speech by head coach Elijah Knepper, the Bluejays fired on all cylinders during a third quarter in which they outscored Telluride 21-6, and then coasted to an easy victory.
With the win, Mancos wrapped up its regular season with a 16-3 record overall and a 10-1 record in the San Juan Basin League.
Mancos will now advance to the Class 2A District 3 tournament, where it will square off against Ridgway or Dolores at Montezuma-Cortez High School on Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. If the Bluejays win, they will square off against either Ignacio or Telluride at M-CHS on Feb. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
