Cortez council rejects land use code update

Overwhelming community opposition given at hours-long hearing
Hundreds of citizens crowded into Cortez City Hall Tuesday in overwhelming opposition to the proposed land-use code.
After hearing more than 50 people speak out against the code, the Cortez City Council unanimously voted to reject the proposed code update.
Mayor Karen Sheek reads aloud the rules of conduct for public participation at the meeting. All speakers were allowed 4 minutes to speak, with city staff serving as a timekeeper.
Community members who didn’t fit into the main meeting room were able to watch a live video-stream in side chambers at City Hall.

Lana Waters and her family have led the charge in opposing the city’s land-use code update over the past year.
Former Montezuma County Commissioner Kent Lindsay recalls his own experience attempting to put together a land-use code for the county, telling the City Council, “don’t be afraid to find the dumpster out back” for the code.
Local homeowner Jodie Henley spoke out against the code update, telling the City Council that it was designed for a city with different demographics than Cortez.
