Cortez Women’s March focuses on rights, elections

Speaker urges marchers to push voting this year
The Cortez annual Women’s March happened Saturday morning, joining many others across the country.
Creative signs have become a hallmark of the Women’s March. Donna Dorsett (left) and Sylvia Clahchischilli teamed up on a sign advocating for diversity and the environment.
Marchers gathered at what is now Veterans Park (formerly City Park) at 10 a.m., and a few of the event’s organizers spoke before the procession began. From left: Patty Coen, Lance McDaniel, and Rebecca Busic.
Marchers practice some chants before starting their trek around the park.
About 250 people attended the fourth annual Women’s March in Cortez.
One of the stated goals of the Women’s March is to end violence against women and communities of color. A Ute Mountain Ute princess represented murdered and missing indigenous women.
Signs took on a variety of themes, from promoting the rights of women and immigrants to environmental protection.
The theme of this year’s Women’s March was “Together We Rise in 2020.” Speaker Rebecca Busic encouraged participants to register others to vote and run for public office.
