Forest Service wants Purgatory to deal with hazardous trees

Removal of dead trees scheduled for this summer
This stand is a mix of fairly healthy spruce firs and some infested with spruce bud worm on the backside of Purgatory Resort.
The lack of needles on the recent growth on these branches shows the effects of spruce bud worm on trees at Purgatory Resort. The new growth on the branches should be full of new needles, but some of these branch tips have no new needles. Note that some tips do have new needles, so not all new growth was hit.
Jed Botsford, a Columbine Ranger District recreation staff officer, skis along a mix of trees that have been damaged by spruce bud worm.
