Like a beacon guiding ships through darkness, Evan Moore has steered the Dolores Bears football team through a somewhat tumultuous last four years.
As coaches, playbooks and teammates have come and gone, Moore has served as a model of consistency and now, in his senior season, the offensive guard/linebacker is relishing every moment.
"It's definitely a new program," said Moore of the 2013 season. "We're having a lot of fun. That's one of the things that I'm trying to do this year, have as much fun as possible."
While enjoying himself, Moore has been playing outstanding football, anchoring the Bears' offensive line, while consistently leading his team in tackles game in and game out.
"On the field this year, (Moore) has had 10-plus tackles every game," said Bears' head coach Chris Trusler. "He just doesn't miss tackles. He has just surpassed, by leaps and bounds, what I thought he was going to be able to do for us."
In addition to his contributions on the field, Moore leads teammates away from the gridiron, using a quiet and unassuming style.
"(Moore) is a quiet leader," said Trusler. "He leads by example and sets a tone for all of the other kids to follow, and they do. He wants guys to be proud to be in this football program."
"I always try to bring a positive attitude," Moore said. "I try to keep everybody fired up and working hard during practice."
When not leading teammates, chasing running backs and protecting his quarterback, Moore focuses on academics and works hard in the weight room.
"(Physical Education) is one of the classes that I enjoy because it's more active," Moore said.
While the senior is currently unsure as to what direction he will pursue upon graduation, he is relishing the opportunity to suit up for his hometown Bears.
"It's definitely really fun," said Moore of playing in Dolores. "Everybody from the community knows you from the radio. You have people show up to games, and they are almost like family because they know you so well."
Certainly true, and without a doubt, the local community that knows Moore so well will always remember him as a quiet, yet consistent, leader who helped lead the Dolores Bears' football team through some uncertain times.
