Mr. and Mrs. Felix Castro, after 26 years, have sold the Hogan Hotel here to Mary Akin, it was announced this week. Mrs. Akin has planned to rename the hotel to Rio Grande Southern Hotel and will make it an outstanding place to stay with much of the flavor or the Old West retained.
The building was built before the railroad depot here and is still in an excellent condition having been well maintained by the Castros during their ownership.
Originally called The Southern it was a favorite dining and lodging place for travelers as well as railroad employees of the Rio Grande Southern. The narrow gauge railroad started through service from Ridgway to Durango in 1891 when Dolores was one of the most important shipping centers in the Southwest for incoming freight to all points south and west of here and for livestock and farm produce going out of the area.
The Castros said they have many wonderful memories of their years here, and wished to thank everyone for the patronage and friendships of the past as they now plan to move to Phoenix and retire.
Resident manager of the hotel for her mother will be Mrs. Margie Wilson who has for some years been owner of the Mountain Flower Beauty Shop here.
