Rain helps replenish McPhee Reservoir

Sunday storm causes mudslides, road closures in La Plata County
Autumn’s first day brought snow to the La Plata Mountains on Monday, Sept. 23. Perhaps it’s a sign of a good winter, but National Weather Service data since 1950 show no correlation between a above-average September precipitation and a big snow year.
Recent rains have increased flows on the Dolores River creating a late summer-early fall boating season and helping to fill the McPhee Reservoir.
A motorist stalled in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango after trying to forge through deep water during a thunderstorm moving through the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 22.
The recent heavy rains in La Plata County have eroded about 6-feet of road base from under a portion of Florida Road, (County Road 240) on Colvig Hill northeast of Durango.
