Rosa Sabido and the Mancos United Methodist Church will host a Day of the Dead celebration on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Day of the Dead – or Día de los Muertos – is a Mexican holiday that honors deceased loved ones and family members, with rituals such as creating altars with offerings meant to welcome the dead back to the realm of the living.
The Mancos church will celebrate the holiday with several traditional festivities, including face painting and an Altar de Muertos. Attendees are invited to bring a picture or special item in remembrance of their loved ones, along with a candle.
The event is free and begins at 4 p.m.
The Day of the Dead celebration also marks 30 months in sanctuary for Sabido, who has been living at the church since June 2017 after her application for a one-year stay of removal was denied by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
