Montezuma County residents will not be affected by mail delivery and retail operations when the U.S. Postal Service consolidates its processing operations in Durango later this month.
“First-Class Mail in the Cortez, Mancos and Dolores area will continue to be delivered overnight,” said U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Brian Sperry.
Sperry said mail-processing operations are scheduled to be relocated from Durango to Albuquerque starting Sept. 28 as part of a larger consolidation by the Postal Service’s vast processing network.
“The Postal Service does not have the mail volumes to justify the size and capacity of our current mail processing network,” he said. “To return to long-term profitability and financial stability while keeping mail affordable, we must match our network to the anticipated workload.”
Sperry said the comprehensive plan is expected to reduce costs by $20 billion over the next three years. No layoffs or furloughs are expected, he added.
“During the consolidation process, every effort is made to minimize the impact to our customers and to our employees,” he said.
The Durango Post Office will continue its mail delivery service and retail operations, and continue serving as a transportation hub and bulk-mail entry unit.
The move has adjusted some collection times to align with transportation and mail-processing operating windows, Sperry said.
