Department of Interior exempts electric bikes from motorized category

New policy would allow electric-assisted bicycles on more federal trails
Bureau of Land Management officials tested electric-assist mountain bikes on motorized routes in the Phil’s World area earlier this summer. A new Department of Interior policy directs the BLM, National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife to enact regulations allowing e-bikes on trails where traditional bikes are allowed.

During a trip to Ignacio, U.S. Interior Secretary David Bernhardt listened to reporters’ questions, including about allowing electric bikes on non-motorized trails.
